Happy 4th of July & Prompts

Happy 4th of July! Be safe and enjoy the BBQ we’re sure you’re going to have.

But try to get some writing in before the food coma takes over. Once you’re too full to move, it will be very unlikely that your creative gears will want to work.

“To preserve the freedom of the human mind then and freedom of the press, every spirit should be ready to devote itself to martyrdom; for as long as we may think as we will, and speak as we think, the condition of man will proceed in improvement” – Thomas Jefferson

Random Prompts:

Take the next 15 minutes to simply write. Time yourself.

  1. A group of kids, all friends, go to the local Rodeo to watch the city’s fireworks show. It’s only minutes out until the biggest show they’ll ever see.
  2. You go to a BBQ party that an old friend is hosting. When you get there with your small family, you run into an old flame. But this person isn’t just anyone, they were the one that got away.
  3. It’s your turn to host the biggest party of the year and nothing is going right. The food is a mess and your flat screen TV decided to stop working that morning. It’s too late to cancel, guests are coming.

Way late on this prompt. But I liked it! So here’s a small bit from what I wrote:

I could smell the food long before I could see the grill. The air was thick from the summer weather and the bellows of smoke added to the mounting heat. In the few steps from my car to the lawn, I could feel my new shirt begin to damp. Now that I was in the middle of the backyard, I was sure that I look as bad as the heat felt. I look over at my son and he seems like he was feeling the effects of it too. His mop of blonde hair clung to his forehead head and his skin was pinking from the heat; a chilled can of soda was pressed to his face.
